So now that I have become a NYRR member, I go to this place on 89th and Madison. That is the official office of the NYRR club. A few days before a race they have what is called a "bib packet". You go there and pick it up between certain times when the club is open. They give you the bib which is this sorta cardboard/paper with your race number on it and on each corner there is a hole. You pick up saftey pins to attach it to yourself on race day. They also give you what I found out is called a "chip". These are yellow thingymajigs that you strap onto your sneaker. There's a sensor in it that can tell you what your "net time" is for the race. So like if you are not running a 6.5 minute mile or less and in the first five rows of the race, chances are if you are like me and starting at a 12 minute mile mark, you don't actually CROSS the start line until a good ten minutes after gun time.
Anyways, the chip is cool because not only does it know when you crossed the start and finish line, it almost immediately gets updated to:
Faster than Velocity
with all the vital stats on how you did on your race! I did my first 6.2 miles this month. Totally mental. I feel very tired. This training is harder than I originally thought. :( You bergers will get the "Faster than Velocity" joke. Blinding one year at the Corp...hehe.
